Overview
This beach is the former site of Fort Fisher, a Civil War fort. Most of the fort has eroded away, but some remains can be seen. An intact WWII bunker remains near the site. The park's single hiking trail, the Basin Trail, travels along the beach, through maritime scrub forest, and over a lengthy boardwalk over marshes. The trail ends at the Basin Overlook.
The hike can be completed in just a leisurely hour or two, but there is enough to see to take considerably longer. Near the park are a few other attractions, including the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher (in sight of the park), the Fort Fisher Memorial, and Fort Fisher Historic Museum.
Animal Life
The maritime forest and marshes host a variety of wildlife. White Ibis, seagulls, brown pelicans, butterflies, and fiddler crabs are abundant.
Plant Life
Maritime forest, grasses, flowers.
