Overview
The Fort Raleigh National Historic Site covers 512 acres on Roanoke Island. The park preserves the location of the Roanoke Colony established in 1585. Nothing remains of the original colony, but there are several points of interest—the reconstructed Fort Raleigh earthworks, a period garden, outdoor theater, visitor's center, and two short trails.

Thomas Harriot Trail is a half-mile self-guided tour, with markers pointing out various plants used by the colonists. Freedom Trail is just over a mile, running from the Elizabethan Gardens to the island's western shore.

Plant Life
Spoonleaf yucca, french mulberry, sasanqua camellia.

Landmarks
Fort Raleigh earthworks, Elizabethan Gardens, Waterside Theatre.

Fort Raleigh is located in Dare County. From Raleigh/Durham, take I-40E to US-64E and drive about 80 miles. Turn left onto US-64/264 and take the William B. Umstead Memorial Bridge to Roanoke Island. The park is located on the left a few miles after the bridge.
