Overview
Penny's Bend Nature Preserve is an 84-acre peninsula surrounded by the Eno River and is home to numerous rare plants, remnants of a Piedmont prairie, alluvial forests, open spaces, and Cameron's Mill. This is a great place for a quiet hike, fishing, and wildlife viewing.
Wildlife
White-tailed deer, foxes, rabbits, chipmunks, squirrels, raccoons, mice, shrews, fish, freshwater mussels, crayfish, snakes, turtles, frogs, toads, great blue herons, green herons, songbirds, ducks, hawks, owls, blue-tailed skinks, butterflies, moths, dragonflies, and damselflies.
Plant Life
Mushrooms, wildflowers, asiatic dayflower, blue wild indigo, smooth purple coneflower, hoary puccoon, Dutchman's breeches, red cedar, pine trees, maples.
Landmarks
Little Hanging Rock and remnants of Cameron's Mill
Location
From Raleigh/Durham, take I-85S to the Roxboro Rd exit. Turn right onto Roxboro Rd and go about 1.5 miles, then turn right onto Old Oxford Rd.
Take Old Oxford Rd for about 3 miles, then turn left onto Snow Hill Rd. Just after crossing a small bridge, gravel parking lot will be immediately to your left. If you past Wanderlust Lane, you went too far.
